I love the Christmas season…the cold wintry nights, the bright lights, the sparkling Christmas tree set in the front room of our house.
For me, what started out as a fun holiday with Santa coming and gifts under the tree has now become a reverent season where instead of asking what I can get, I now ask what I can give. Instead of Jingle Bells and Frosty the Snowman songs stuck in my head, I now sing O, Holy Night and Away in a Manger.
A favorite musical of mine is the Forgotten Carols. The Forgotten Carols tells the story of the Nativity from the perspective of the not-so-much talked about people mentioned in Luke’s account as well as some fictitious characters that may have been in Bethlehem that night; such as the Innkeeper, the shepherds, the wise men, and a group of homeless.
In this story, the Innkeeper recounts his experience the night of Christ’s birth – hearing a knock on the door of his Inn and opening the door to see a young pregnant wife and her husband in need of shelter. His inn was full that night with other guest so he had to turn them away. As the night goes on, the innkeeper can’t get the thought of that young mother out of his mind. As he lays in bed restless, wondering if they are okay, he decides to go out and look for them to invite them back to his Inn where he has made room for them.
I love the message this story portrays of the innkeeper and the questions it makes me ponder. Do I have room for Christ to be born in me, in my soul? If there isn’t any room in my soul or mind (because I’ve filled it with less-valuable and meaningless stuff) do I have the courage to make the room? If I have turned Christ away for lesser things, do I have the humility to admit my mistakes and search for Him to re-invite Him back into my soul?
I have a testimony of our relationship with Christ and the love that He has for us. I testify that Christ is our Saviour and the Redeemer of our soul. He can heal our souls. He can comfort our souls. He can enlighten our souls. He is Wonderful, our Counselor, the Prince of Peace.
Invite Christ into your soul this Christmas season. Make Him room! Let Him in!
